1992 Employee of the Year interview
The Spiffo’s® employee of the year is … Nick Sallins, manager of our outlet beside American Tire Park in Akron, Ohio ! Nick has singlehandedly overseen a doubling in the income of the restaurant, and customer feedback has consistently highlighted the high quality of the food, hygiene, and friendliness of the staff at the location. We asked Nick a few questions about himself, his job, and what advice he would give to other managers !
Nick, you are consistently ranked in the top Spiffo’s® employees all across the United States. Tell us about how you started, and how you got here.*
“I started out as a line cook in a competing restaurant chain. The work was stressful, but worst of all was the obvious ways I saw to fix the outlet’s problems. Thing was, no-one was interested in hearing what I had to say. In fact, they fired me for complaining ! Thankfully, I soon got a job with Spiffo’s®. They had much higher standards, but when I saw something that needed to be looked at, my manager treated me with respect and tried to act on my advice. The day I was made manager myself, I made a vow to treat my own employees with as much respect.”
What would you say makes a good Spiffo’s® employee?
“It all comes down to respect: respect for the customer by giving them what they want, on time, to as high a standard as possible; respect for your manager by being punctual, doing what you’re asked to, and speaking and dressing appropriately; and respect for our owners, Spiffo Corp, by being thankful for high wages and great conditions, which they are not legally obliged to uphold.”
What is your favorite thing about working for Spiffo Corp?
“Recognition ! And I don’t just mean this award. I’ve always felt valued by the corporation. Many corporations are faceless operations caring only about money, doing shady deals and corrupt schemes to get what they want, while exploiting their workers and destroying the environment. None of those things are true of Spiffo Corp. In many ways, the world would be a much different place if every business was run like ours.”
