Our History

Spifenmeister Brothers

Founded in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1940 by brothers John and Kevin Spifenmeister, the low price and quick service of the first Spiffo burgers made the restaurant a favorite of locals. The brothers soon opened more outlets, and Spiffo’s® became a rapidly growing franchise.

Following Kevin Spifenmeister’s unexpected departure from the organisation, John became the sole owner of the Spiffo’s empire, which grew rapidly throughout the 1950s, with an average of 14 restaurants in each US state by 1960. In 1971 Spiffo’s® even expanded into outer space, when NASA astronaut Buzz Delahunt ate a Spiffo’s® burger on the moon ! Even the sky isn’t a limit for Spiffo’s® ! Sadly, Kevin did not live to see his brother’s success - but we know he would have been proud !

Today, Spiffo’s® restaurants can today be found as far afield as China, Brazil, and the former Soviet Union. In fact, 80% of the world’s population live less than five miles from a Spiffo’s®, and over two billion people have had at least one meal with us !

Spiffo’s® continues to expand into new markets, adapting to local market conditions and tastes with such innovations as a falafel burger in the Middle East, sushi burgers in Japan, and an “Irish coffee” milkshake in Ireland. By the year 2000, it’s predicted Spiffo’s® will have served almost a quarter of the earth’s population. Long live Spiffo !
